Vaccinations

Vaccines are essential in providing your pet with the best chances for a long and happy life. There are several highly contagious, potentially life-threatening illnesses that can be preventable if your pet is fully vaccinated against them. Some diseases, such as leptospirosis, can also be transmitted to humans, putting the rest of your family at risk if your fur child does not have adequate protection.    

There are several core vaccines for both cats and dogs. There are also additional optional vaccinations that may be relevant for your pet's health dependent on area and age. For more information on recommended vaccines for your pet, book a wellness appointment with your veterinarian today

It is typically recommended that cats and dogs begin receiving their core vaccines at around 6-9 weeks old.  However, it is never too late to start vaccinating your pets against life-threatening illnesses. If you recently adopted an older pet that is unvaccinated or realized your current pet is not up to date, you can still take them to the vet to start on their core vaccination

Some vaccinations, like Rabies, are only required every 3 years. Whereas some, like Flu and Bordetella, are needed every year to maintain their protection. Speak with your veterinarian regarding vaccination schedules to be sure your pet stays up to date!

As with some human vaccines, there can be minor side effects in pet vaccines that typically disappear with a day or two. These include symptoms like minor redness around the injection site or fatigue. They are completely normal and will not harm your pet long-term.   

More severe reactions can occur in a very small percentage of pets who have underlying health problems. It is important to let your veterinarian know of any conditions or prior reactions your pet has had before their vaccination.
